Relieve Your Headaches and Get Back to Living Your Life!

Do you suffer from frequent headaches? If so, you’ll be relieved to know you’re not alone. Headaches are the third most commonly reported cause of pain worldwide.

Poor posture, stress, and other factors can lead to muscle and joint weakness, tension, and neck injuries—all of which can contribute to headaches. This can cause pain that radiates from the scalp, the sides of the head, or even the forehead.

Although physical therapy isn’t always the first thing people think of when searching for relief, it can be extremely effective. Medications may only provide short-term relief, so if you’re living with chronic headaches, physical therapy can be the key to long-term improvement.

What Types of Headaches Are There?

Knowing how to recognize the type of headache you’re experiencing can help determine which physical therapy treatments will benefit you the most.

The three main types of headaches include:

  • Musculoskeletal headaches: These headaches occur when the neck is overworked. The most common causes are physical imbalances, deficiencies, or injuries, although emotional stress can also play a role. Whiplash and other neck injuries can place strain on the muscles and connective tissues, leading to musculoskeletal headaches.
  • Cervicogenic headaches: This type of headache is caused by pain originating in the upper three vertebrae of the neck. Cervicogenic headaches may result from conditions such as concussion, arthritis, or work-related strain. They are more common in people whose jobs require frequent downward head or neck movements.
  • Tension headaches: These headaches are caused by pressure on the dura mater, a delicate membrane that surrounds the brain. When the dura mater is stressed, it can trigger spasms near the small muscles at the base of the skull, sending pain signals to the brain and causing headaches. This is often related to repetitive movements or poor head and neck posture.

Benefits of Physical Therapy for Headache Relief

At your first appointment, one of our highly qualified physical therapists will perform a physical examination to determine the type of headache you’re experiencing and identify the source of your pain. From there, a treatment plan will be created specifically for you, which may include targeted exercises, manual therapy, and patient education.

Physical therapy helps manage chronic headaches by:

  • Improving function and mobility
  • Reducing or resolving the intensity, frequency, and duration of headaches
  • Decreasing the need for or reliance on medication
  • Improving ease of movement in the neck
  • Enhancing overall quality of life

Remember—you are unique, and your treatment plan will be too!
